At Lagom , coffee isn’t just what we do — it’s who we are.

Lagom grew out of two very different paths that ended up crossing over a shared love of great coffee.

Our Story

A barista pours coffee from a black pitcher into a white disposable cup at a coffee shop. The barista has short brown hair, a beard, and wears a black shirt. Background includes coffee equipment and a blurred sign.
A man with a beard and mustache wearing a black t-shirt and a baseball cap, standing in front of a menu board with white letter tiles.
A wooden table set with a glass of water, a cappuccino with latte art on a wooden tray, and a plate with two toasted sandwiches.

Charlie spent nine years in the British Army, and somewhere between the early mornings and long days, a simple cup of coffee became something more. He started digging into what makes a genuinely good brew—experimenting at home, learning the craft, and sharing his progress online. He make a life changing decision to follow a passion and left the military, joining Fika Coffee Roasters, where he met Matt.

Matt’s journey started much earlier, back in 2004, living in Melbourne—the kind of city where coffee isn’t just a drink, it’s a way of life. While working in IT, he trained as a barista and got hooked. Years later, after moving back to Durham, he launched Fika Coffee Roasters with the goal of bringing that same sense of connection and care to the North East.

Once Charlie and Matt began working together, it became obvious they shared the same vision: create a place where people could slow down, enjoy something crafted with intention, and feel genuinely welcome.

That’s how Lagom came to life—a speciality coffee bar built by two people who love what they do and want others to enjoy it just as much. Whether you're deep into coffee or just want something really good in your cup, Lagom is a space to relax, explore, and feel at home.

Sourcing our beans…

We source our coffee beans from some of the most sought after specialty roasters around the world, partnering with those who share our dedication to quality, transparency, and craftsmanship.

Each month, we thoughtfully rotate our specialty coffee offerings to highlight beans that are in season and at their peak. We select from a variety of origins, focusing on farms and producers who prioritise quality and sustainability.

In curating each month’s selections, we look for distinctive flavor profiles, ranging from bright, fruity and floral to rich, chocolatey and sweet, so there’s always something new to discover. This approach allows us to celebrate the diversity of coffee and offer our guests a fresh and memorable experience with every cup.
